GM rice is widely on sale in Hubei Province, Central China Television reported at the weekend.
Three out of five bags of rice randomly bought at supermarkets in provincial capital Wuhan were found to contain GM varieties.
China has never approved the commercial growth of GM rice, nor its import.
At a rice production area in Wuhan’s Jiangxia District, a farmer said the Bt63 GM rice variety was popular among growers as it is genetically modified to be pest resistant.
This offers growers savings of between 200 yuan to 300 yuan per mu of land, said the farmer.

這位農(nóng)民表示，這可以使種植者每畝地節(jié)省200至300元。

文中的GM rice就是“轉(zhuǎn)基因大米”的意思，其中GM在此是genetically modified（轉(zhuǎn)基因的、基因改良的）的縮寫。genetically（與基因有關(guān)地）派生自名詞gene（基因），對應(yīng)的形容詞為genetic或genetical（基因的；遺傳的）。genetics是指“遺傳學(xué)”，表示單數(shù)意義。
