“On the cuff”來源于酒吧。二十世紀(jì)早期的酒吧間里，男招待穿的襯衣很特殊，袖口與袖子是分開的，袖口很硬。如果有客人要賒賬的話，酒吧招待就會把他們賒欠的費用寫在袖口上。
大家可能會想起魯迅先生的小說《孔乙己》中孔乙己“賒賬”的情景——酒館老板把他的名字以及賒欠的費用都寫在一塊黑板上，直到他還清才擦掉……
此外，“on the cuff”有時也可表示“免費的（地）”。
