Emily: We’ve only known each other for six weeks!

Ross: Yeah, I know, so what? I mean, who’s-who’s to say? Does that mean we-we can’t do it? Look, huh, I was with Carol for four years before we got married and I wound up divorced from a pregnant lesbian. I mean, this, this makes sense for us. Come on! I mean, on our first date we ended up spending the whole weekend in Vermont! I mean, last night I got my ear pierced! Me! This feels right. Doesn’t it?

Emily: My parents are going to be really mad.

Ross: Is that—are you saying yes? Is that yes?

Emily: Yes.

當Ross提出結(jié)婚這個想法時，Emily說他瘋了，因為Emily與Ross才相識了六個星期。Ross覺得相識的時間并不是個問題，他和前妻Carol在結(jié)婚之前可是相處了四年，最后Carol都已懷上了Ross的孩子，可他們還是以離婚告終，因為Carol是個同性戀(Look, huh, I was with Carol for four years before we got married and I wound up divorced from a pregnant lesbian.)。結(jié)婚可是兩個人的事，所以Ross說：I mean, this, this makes sense for us. make sense 是個常用的詞組，sense作為名詞的解釋之一就是“意義”，因此 make sense就表示“理解”，“…有意義”，比如：Read this and tell me if it makes sense. 這個詞組還常常以這樣的形式出現(xiàn)，it makes sense (for somebody) to do something，如：It makes sense to save money while you can.
